Sports Leaders

At St Cuthbert’s, we have our Year 5 and Year 6 Sports Leaders as part of our PE provision, who regularly meet to discuss any ideas regarding physical education. Sports leaders have an opportunity to share their own thoughts and opinions with the group and collectively agree on any decisions that are made.

Our sports Leaders are trained at the beginning of the year to lead activities and games with younger children and are taught the important qualities that are needed when working with young people. Our Sports Leaders work with Key Stage 1 children on a rota basis during lunchtimes each week to lead games and ensure playtimes are inclusive for everyone and that no child is left alone with no one to play with. We also have a rota for Key Stage 2 which involves several activities in which the Sports Leaders organise and run. These activities can include; netball/basketball, target games, tag rugby, cricket, football, hula hooping etc.

The Sports Leader role develops important values such as patience, friendship, compassion and kindness as well as building their confidence and communication skills throughout the year.

Sports Leaders help to organise and lead events such as Sports Day, intra tournaments and PE lessons and they give opinions on what they would like our PE and sport provision at St Cuthbert’s to offer in the future. Our Y5 Sports Leaders also help in Breakfast Club as they have produced an activities rota based on different sports and skills, to keep the children active during Breakfast Club. St Cuthbert’s Sports Leaders also help to tidy and organised the PE cupboard and outdoor equipment box to ensure all equipment is stored correctly ready for all activities.
